Don't Let a Burst Pipe Ruin Your Holidays: Winter Plumbing Tips for Yuba City Residents

Winter in Yuba City might not be as harsh as some places, but we still get those freezing nights that can wreak havoc on your plumbing. A burst pipe can cause significant water damage, leading to costly repairs and a major headache. Don't wait until it's too late – take these preventative steps now to protect your home!

  1. Insulate Exposed Pipes

Pipes in unheated areas like garages, crawl spaces, and attics are most vulnerable. Wrap them with foam pipe insulation (available at any hardware store). Even newspaper can provide some temporary protection in a pinch. Pay special attention to pipes near exterior walls.

  2. Let Faucets Drip

When temperatures dip below freezing, allow a slow, steady drip from faucets served by exposed pipes. Even a tiny trickle keeps water moving, making it much harder for ice to form. Both hot and cold lines should be allowed to drip.

  3. Disconnect and Drain Outdoor Hoses

This is crucial! Water trapped in a hose can freeze and expand, putting pressure on the connected faucet and potentially causing a pipe to burst inside your wall. Disconnect hoses, drain them completely, and store them indoors. Consider installing frost-proof outdoor faucets.

  4. Know Your Main Water Shut-Off Valve

If a pipe does burst, you need to shut off the water supply immediately to minimize damage. Locate your main water shut-off valve (usually near the water meter) and make sure everyone in your household knows where it is and how to use it. Test it to ensure it's working properly.

  5. Maintain Consistent Indoor Temperature

Even if you're going away for a few days, keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (13°C). This helps prevent pipes from freezing, especially those in exterior walls. Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes.

  6. Watch for Warning Signs

If you notice a sudden drop in water pressure, discolored water, or hear unusual gurgling sounds from your pipes, it might be a sign of a developing problem. Contact a plumber immediately.
